Northbay Shellfish Ltd (NBS) is located in Orkney – which are islands situated to the north of the UK mainland. This organisation is a UK SME that undertakes a range of shellfish based activities. It operates and advises shellfish hatcheries involving oysters, scallops and lobsters. The company also operates as an advisor to the local (Orkney) and wider Scottish (UK) shellfish industry with regard to algal toxins from an industrial point of view.
The company has been involved in EU framework projects for over 12 years and has co-ordinated some projects and in others has filled the role of Exploitation Manager. The company has developed some IPR within research projects including undertaking the protection of Intellectual Property in the FP6 project SPIES-DETOX. The company was an SME partner in FP5 project ALGADEC which developed technology for detection equipment for Algal toxins present in the environment. NBS is in a good position to exploit developments in biosensors and is looking to market biosensors in the sector of analysis of ships water ballast. NBS is well placed to disseminate the results of the project to the shellfish industry.
